STAFF ATTORNEY

The EP is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney to litigate post-conviction claims on our clients’ behalf. The Staff Attorney will be expected to maintain his/her/their own caseload as well as support other attorneys. The Staff Attorney will perform all functions expected of an attorney, including conducting investigations, filing pleadings in court, arguing motions, handling court appearances, writing appellate briefs, maintaining attorney-client communications, and making strategic decisions in the best interest of the client.

The EP is a client-centered, nimble advocacy organization that aspires to produce the best possible legal product for our clients.  As a staff, we accomplish work quickly and efficiently and do whatever justice demands for our clients.  For this reason, an ideal Staff Attorney must be client-focused, motivated, and able to work independently. Staff Attorneys can expect to be very busy, but must also be able to deliver exceptional work product.

The Staff Attorney position is based in the EP’s West Loop office (Fulton Market area) in Chicago. Some travel is required.

Term:  This is a term position that will last for one year from the date employment begins, but the goal would be that the position may be extended or made permanent at the EP’s discretion, based on performance. Our intention is for this position to begin no later than April 2019.

Compensation is commensurate with experience and includes full benefits.

Qualifications: Candidates must hold a J.D. and be a member in good standing of the Illinois State Bar by the time of their hire. Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in litigation. Post-conviction litigation experience and/or criminal or civil rights litigation experience is strongly preferred, but not required. We are seeking an attorney with superior qualifications and references.

LITIGATION SPECIALIST (Non-Attorney)

The EP is seeking a Litigation Specialist to work as a part of the legal team to provide substantive and administrative support to attorneys and staff on all EP cases.

Primary responsibilities include: interacting with clients, courthouse staff, and other governmental entities; coordinating prison visits and calls for attorneys; working with attorneys to prepare and timely file pleadings; managing electronic and physical case files as well as incoming correspondence and sensitive case documents; drafting and proofreading documents; conducting research; preparing for and assisting in court during hearings and trials; case investigation projects; answering phones; and other duties as needed.

This position is based in our Chicago West Loop Office (Fulton Market area).

  • An ability to think creatively about projects in a fast-moving litigation environment.
  • Analytical skills necessary to independently collect, analyze, and interpret data and resolve problems requiring innovative solutions.
  • Self-direction for daily work, but capacity to interact positively with the team as well.
  • Experience and desire to work with a diverse population.

Our ideal candidate is a self-starter who brings diligence and compassion to the work and is able to work collaboratively with our team and partner organizations to advocate for our clients. Spanish-speaking is strongly preferred but not required.

The EP is a fast-paced environment and is staffed by highly effective and efficient professionals. This makes for a fast-paced environment where work is often needed to be completed on tight deadlines.
