Case Manager / Social Service Worker

The organization and the position: The Exoneration Project is a free legal clinic that represents innocent people who have been wrongfully convicted of crimes they did not commit. Its partner, Loevy & Loevy, is a civil rights law firm that represents those victims of the justice system and others who have suffered from police abuse or government misconduct. We are seeking highly motivated candidates to provide both programmatic and individual case management and social services to clients of both organizations. 

Our clients sometimes need assistance while still incarcerated and frequently need direct support for successful re-entry to their communities upon release. As a result of their trauma and extended wrongful incarceration, some of our clients may experience periods of crisis, and many need assistance with life skills to get on their feet and build support and community.

The job: 

Individual Case Management: 

– Identify and link clients with resources for jobs, job development, housing, furnishings, physical and mental healthcare, transportation, food, money, etc. 
– Escort local clients to appointments and agencies as appropriate and needed
– Connect distant clients to appropriate case management services in their area
– Address housing, health and financial emergencies to protect client’s safety and welfare
– Assist clients in achieving financial stability and independence, including budgeting, seeking grants or loans, and planning for receipt of awards and settlements

Programming: 

– Provide monthly learning and peer support opportunities for client base
– Create a quarterly newsletter for people who are currently in prison
– Support the Exoneration Project’s role in the innocence community

Community Resources and Partnerships: 

– Seek consultation from and makes referrals to appropriate disciplines and agencies as needed
– Establish and build upon community partnerships to further individual and collective client needs and raise consciousness about exoneree/wrongful conviction survivor needs in the broader criminal justice community 

Other client and organizational needs that may be identified

Qualifications and competencies

– Degree in human services (social work, criminal justice, counseling, etc.). Advanced degree preferred, though license not required
– 2+ years of relevant casework/case management experience with adults 
– Demonstrated knowledge of community resources (e.g., housing, employment, etc.) and an ability to connect clients and families with these resources
– Ability to identify mental health crises/substance use and provide access to support
– Experience with re-entry, parole system, criminal justice, including familiarity with housing, treatment and financial resources available
– Experience accessing public benefits and social service programs (job training, workforce re-entry, SSDI, ACA, Medicare/Medicaid/Link)
– Organizational skills necessary to prioritize and manage an appropriate caseload of clients
– Experience, skills, and desire to work with a diverse population in a client-centered organization
– Self-direction required for daily work 
– Training and work experience in restorative justice practices preferred 
– Driver’s License
– Financial literacy 
– Spanish proficiency a plus 

Location: This position is based in our West Loop office in Chicago. Access to a car and some travel is required. 

Salary and benefits: Salary commensurate with experience. Generous benefits, including fully paid health insurance. Clinical supervision available to those working towards licensing exams.
