STAFF ATTORNEY BASED IN EITHER WASHINGTON, D.C. OR NEW YORK CITY

Position: The Exoneration Project is seeking a full-time attorney to litigate post-conviction claims on behalf of our clients. We are open to candidates based out of either our Washington, D.C. or New York City offices. This role offers extensive opportunity to act as a lead attorney in cases through all phases of litigation and to work collaboratively with other lawyers in the EP and outside organizations.

We are looking for self-starters, persuasive writers, creative thinkers, effective communicators and collaborators, and people who are passionate about advocating for the rights of those wrongfully convicted and imprisoned. Our litigation includes extensive factual investigations and often complex written legal arguments. Courtroom advocacy is also a critical component of our work: EP attorneys routinely litigate complex motions, hearings, appeals and retrials.

The EP is a client-centered, nimble advocacy organization that aspires to produce the best possible legal outcome for our clients. An ideal attorney must be client-focused, motivated, and able to work creatively and independently, while also leading teams of paralegals, investigators, law students, and reentry specialists in providing outstanding service to our clients. Our attorneys are busy while consistently delivering effective work product.

We are seeking an attorney who will lead investigations, draft post-conviction pleadings, prepare for hearings or trial, and litigate cases on the East Coast. Travel is required.

The salary for this position, commensurate with experience, is $110,000 plus substantial performance bonuses. Compensation includes generous health insurance benefits, 401k matching contribution, and unlimited annual leave.

Qualifications: Candidates must hold a J.D. and be a member in good standing of either the Maryland, Pennsylvania, D.C. and/or New York State Bar(s) at the time of their hire, or eligible for immediate reciprocal admission upon hire. Ideally, we are seeking an attorney with 3+ years of relevant litigation experience, including criminal, post-conviction, and/or civil rights experience. Spanish-speaking ability is a plus.
