Chicago Contract Attorney

The Exoneration Project (EP) is seeking a full time contract attorney to assist with a new initiative and partnership with the Iowa State Public Defender’s Office, Wrongful Conviction Division (WCD), and the Midwest Innocence Project. The EP contract attorney will be assisting these projects in conducting a statewide review of Iowa criminal cases that rely on overstated forensic analysis.

The EP contract attorney will be supervised by a licensed Iowa lawyer with the EP and work closely with the WCD Director to review documents, determine the location and existence of evidence, and draft motions for post-conviction forensic testing or relief.

Candidates should have a strong interest in criminal law, appellate and postconviction litigation, and working for underserved populations. The position requires an ability and interest to carefully review lengthy documents, write clearly and persuasively, work independently, and be innovative.

The position is based in the EP’s Chicago office. An Iowa law license is preferred but not required. Recent law graduates are encouraged to apply.

The contract would begin September 1, 2017 and last until at least December 31, 2017, with the possibility of renewal terms.

The Exoneration Project is a national pro bono program based out of the Kane Center for Legal Education at the University of Chicago Law School in Chicago, Illinois.  Law students work alongside veteran civil rights attorneys to represent innocent individuals who are incarcerated for crimes they did not commit.
