After spending 28 years being wrongfully incarcerated, David Wright was released from custody last Friday, two weeks after his conviction was vacated on August 30 at the conclusion of a post-conviction hearing. Wright was just 17 in 1994 when he was arrested for a crime he did not commit. He turns 46 tomorrow.
He came home to his loving family and supporters. Wrongful convictions and mass incarceration have devastating effects on not only the individual being incarcerated, but also on the people and loved ones in their lives. Even with the deep injustice he has endured, David is an incredible, gentle, and kind man.
Welcome home, David. And happy birthday.
I cried tears of joy upon your release but watching you walking out of that court a free man with all charged dropped was a dream come true. Congratulations David and I know this has to be the Happiest Birthday you have had in a long time. Enjoy your freedom! Now I also need my brother to also gain his freedom and my prayers will be completely answered. I am so happy for you!
